Four-Dimensional Objects: Kinetic Glass Sculpture
Even simple movement in glass sculpture adds a dimension of
emotional engagement, visceral tension and intellectual fascination.
This experience can be anything from playful to disturbing - and is provocative
in terms that can be precise or ambiguous, according to
the artist's inclination and skill.
Using the lampwork technique and borosilicate glass, we will explore a number of
methods for imparting motion to glass sculpture. Simple mechanisms
such as pivots, bearings, cranks, cams and pulleys can be combined to make
intriguing and evocative contraptions on a large or small scale.
Blown glass pistons and valves can be assembled into animated fountains, hydraulic
pumps and even fanciful steam-powered machines.
Through a combination of group
discussion, structured exercises and free practice time, students will
develop a vocabulary of basic techniques and components they can use
to build kinetic sculpture in glass. Design considerations such as basic
layout, structural strength, assembly strategies and sources of supplies
will also be covered. Students will also learn how to make time-saving jigs from
graphite, steel and mullite (kiln shelves). In the course of the class,
Bandhu will demonstrate the creation of one of his own kinetic contraptions.
Students will receive a list of recommended tools to bring. No particular
scientific or engineering background is needed.

Lively Lampworking
This class will focus on bringing flameworked glass to life. We will make representations
of natural forms - whether animal (including human) or plant - which may be literal and
realistic or stylized an abstract. How do we get there from here? Subjects will include
technical tricks and issues of proportion and gesture in lifelike figures.
We will also work with vessels, goblets, and kinetic glass sculpture.
Intermediate level; basic flameworking skills reuqired.

Forces of Nature
Through a combination of demonstrations, assigned projects, and free practice time,
this two-week class will engage Nature on several levels. Drawing inspiration
from beautiful local environment, we will work with a variety of natural forms in glass:
plant, animal and human. Starting with basic shapes, we will build a vocabulary of organic
sculptural components. Bandhu will also be pursuing his experiments with kinetic glass
sculpture and will offer instruction in making simple glass machines, which operate on
natural forces such as gravity, heat and air pressure.
Bring a sketchbook and slides of your work.

Figural Lampwork Techniques
This 3-day class will use natural forms found in plants and animals as vehicles to explore lampwork technique, from beginning to advanced.
Most of the techniques used in lampwork in our day originated with artisans who have made novelty animal and plant figurines for centuries.
Sadly, many contemporary lampworkers do not have access to these techniques in their original form. This class will build a solid foundation
for attractive, provocative and well-crafted figures that can be used in a modern sculptural context.

Lampwork Sculptural Techniques
This 2-day workshop will focus on solid lampworking technique, primarily using borosilicate (Pyrex)
glass. We will develop a vocabulary of basic forms and combine them into more complex sculptures,
including figures and abstract designs. Construction principles and design opportunities unique to lampworking will be
emphasized. We will also make some simple forms from glass tubing. This is an excellent opportunity for basic instruction
from one of the foremost teachers of lampwork technique. Intermediate and advanced students will also discover some new techniques!
